The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has granted $2 million in technical assistance for the "Preparation of the Sindh Coastal Resilience Sector Project" in Pakistan's Sindh province.
This project aims to enhance the resilience of the coastal region in Sindh, focusing on the Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin districts. These areas have suffered from environmental challenges such as land subsidence, flooding, erosion, and saltwater intrusion, which are expected to worsen due to climate change. Additionally, poverty rates are high, and there are low levels of education and literacy, as well as limited access to essential services.
One key aspect is the lack of comprehensive strategies for mitigating risks that incorporate nature-based solutions. The technical assistance will assist the government in preparing the project effectively, with two main objectives: developing a strategic framework for coastal resilience with priority investments and enhancing the project's readiness.
The operational priorities for this project include accelerating progress in gender equality, addressing climate change, bolstering climate and disaster resilience, and promoting environmental sustainability, as well as supporting rural development and food security.
