Metrobus service resumes in Lahore

The new contractor of Metrobus service will resume the operations from Wednesday (today) with a fleet of 60 vehicles after a three-week break caused by the strike of the drivers and other staff against the previous contractor -- Albayrak -- over non-payment of arrears, bonuses, and other benefits.

The drivers, who had also demanded experience certificates and gratuity, ended the protest after the new contractor took over the charge.

They had announced to move the court for getting their issues redressed and demanded the government should not return the security amount to the previous contractor till their demands were met.

Punjab government had signed an agreement with a local company -- Veda Transit Solutions -- and a group of local banks to replace the existing fleet of 64 buses running on the 27-kilometer-long track of the Lahore Metro Bus System last year.

As per the agreement, the new contractor, that took over the charge of the bus service on September 1, will manage it for the next eight years. The project is expected to pave the way for more such initiatives in the future for the masses, reducing the air pollution challenges the country was faced with.

He said the new contractor had also recruited fresh drivers, besides giving contracts to some of the old ones who worked with Albayrak.

The Metrobus service was launched in the city in February 2013. The project, the first of its kind in Pakistan, is facilitating 150,000 passengers’ travel daily within the metropolitan city.

میٹروبس سروس کا نیا ٹھیکیدار بدھ (آج) سے 60 گاڑیوں کے بیڑے کے ساتھ تین ہفتوں کے وقفے کے بعد ڈرائیوروں اور دیگر عملے کی ہڑتال کی وجہ سے پچھلے ٹھیکیدار البیراک کے خلاف عدم ادائیگی پر دوبارہ کام شروع کرے گا۔

ڈرائیور ، جنہوں نے تجربے کے سرٹیفکیٹ اور گریچیوٹی کا بھی مطالبہ کیا تھا ، نئے ٹھیکیدار کے چارج سنبھالنے کے بعد احتجاج ختم کر دیا۔

انہوں نے اپنے مسائل کے ازالے کے لیے عدالت جانے کا اعلان کیا تھا اور حکومت سے مطالبہ کیا تھا کہ جب تک ان کے مطالبات پورے نہیں ہوتے وہ سیکورٹی کی رقم پچھلے ٹھیکیدار کو واپس نہ کریں۔

پنجاب حکومت نے گزشتہ سال لاہور میٹرو بس سسٹم کے 27 کلومیٹر لمبے ٹریک پر چلنے والی 64 بسوں کے موجودہ بیڑے کو تبدیل کرنے کے لیے ایک مقامی کمپنی ویدا ٹرانزٹ سلوشنز اور مقامی بینکوں کے ایک گروپ کے ساتھ معاہدہ کیا تھا۔

معاہدے کے مطابق ، نیا ٹھیکیدار ، جس نے یکم ستمبر کو بس سروس کا چارج سنبھالا تھا ، اگلے آٹھ سال تک اس کا انتظام کرے گا۔ توقع ہے کہ اس منصوبے سے عوام کے لیے مستقبل میں اس طرح کے مزید اقدامات کی راہ ہموار ہوگی ، جس سے ملک کو درپیش فضائی آلودگی کے چیلنجوں میں کمی آئے گی۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ نئے ٹھیکیدار نے نئے ڈرائیوروں کو بھی بھرتی کیا ہے ، اس کے علاوہ کچھ پرانے کو ٹھیکہ دیا گیا ہے جنہوں نے البیراک کے ساتھ کام کیا۔

فروری 2013 میں شہر میں میٹروبس سروس کا آغاز کیا گیا تھا۔ یہ منصوبہ پاکستان میں اپنی نوعیت کا پہلا منصوبہ ہے ، جو میٹروپولیٹن شہر میں روزانہ 150،000 مسافروں کے سفر کی سہولت فراہم کر رہا ہے۔
